Amazing Kittery Trading Post
The moment we walked into the Kittery Trading Post in Kittery, Maine, we knew spending an entire day, and a fortune were strong possibilities at this mammoth-sized store for outdoor enthusiasts. The outdoor recreation gear, apparel, and footwear levels excited us. They worried at the same time, as we only had an hour to redeem a $75.00 gift certificate that got a very caring brother gave us for our 10th anniversary. The prospects of accomplishing this fascinating retail mission in a short time were about as likely as hitting the coast of Maine in an hour.
With a quick scan of the Kittery Trading Post open floor plan, we saw departments for activewear, outerwear, accessories, footwear, uniquely made-in-Maine gifts for “home and home”, hiking, camping, rock climbing, winter and water sports, shooting sports (guns) and freshwater or saltwater fishing equipment.
We’ve taken the ‘Cliff Notes’ approach, ignoring areas of little personal interest and focusing on the ‘result’.
We spotted a few discount shelves where we picked up some fall fleece jackets. The quality of these and other clothes seemed built to last, unlike some discount stores. Kittery Trading Post We also bought a state-of-the-art pedometer which, if we had used it in the store, would have shown maybe six or seven miles of walking on all three levels.
The hired help was quite pleasant and quick to help, cutting our trip through what seemed like the entire southern New Hampshire region by minutes.
Our hour at the Kittery Trading Post was an interesting experience. We will be back, looking for the best deals and, more importantly, enjoying the unique environment that resembles L.L. Bean with a more localized, rustic twist.

Kittery Trading Post History
Kittery Trading Post is a well-known Maine facility that has equipped customers for the outdoors since 1938. The family-owned business prides itself on offering the best products and services to enhance your time outdoors, from select brands of quality and products to the knowledge and personalized service of the staff.
This pride was reflected in a multi-year, multi-phase renovation and creation of a strong visual gateway to the store (as well as to the state of Maine). Lasse Architects, inspired by Maine’s rich forest history, created new entrances and an overall façade upgrade to complement the interior offerings.
Inside the store, a fresh retail circulation and organization system has been designed to improve the flow of customers and staff. Green spaces have been dotted throughout the store, using real Maine plants and produce, to instill a sense of adventure and discovery and improve the shopping experience. Dramatic skylights have been installed throughout the new lobby to promote natural light, and an additional mezzanine provides private administrative offices for members of management.
